Wilkerson claims No. 3 spot, bonus marks in preparation for Sunday at the NHRA Arizona Nationals

CHANDLER, Ariz. (February 23, 2019) – The second raceday of the 2019 season of NHRA’s Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will take place on Sunday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, and Tim Wilkerson, driver of the Levi, Ray and Shoup Ford Mustang, will be starting from the No. 3 position. The team’s effective efforts resulted in two powerful passes that sent a total of three bonus marks their way as one of the quickest cars in two of three qualifying rounds.

Qualifying got off to a rough start for everyone as the first day was nearly a complete rain-out, and only a few cars were able to make it down the track. Wilkerson’s nitro Funny Car didn’t find any traction on the surface, and thusly he was unable to produce a good number. He was still No. 8 for the session, however, and Saturday was a complete turnaround in every way with sunshine on the racetrack and nary a cloud.

“We’ve been running pretty good,” said Wilkerson, who clocked a bold 3.895-second pass at 324.44 mph in early session on Saturday, then followed up with an even better 3.885, 325.97 in the final qualifying round.

“It’s been leaving the starting line good every run, and that’s what we’re trying to do. We tried some really silly stuff there last run, but we’re not going to go up there doing the same thing and hoping it works. We changed about four things, and man, it was beautiful. It was smooth and fast.”

Wilkerson will race former Funny Car champ Jack Beckman in the first round.

“That’s a bad draw for being No. 3 qualifier, but he’s got us, we don’t have him. We’ll see how it goes,” said an optimistic Wilkerson.

Eliminations at the 35th annual Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals will begin on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park at 11:00 a.m. MT.
