MORRISON, Colo. (July 19, 2019) – The thin air of Denver proved to be a non-issue for KB Racing and Team Summit as Greg Anderson powered the red Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro to the top of the pack on the first day of qualifying for the 40th annual Mile-High NHRA Nationals. Anderson, the defending event champion and a three-time winner on the mountain, is off to a strong start in seeking his first win of the 2019 season of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

“I love racing here,” said Anderson, who has four previous poles at Bandimere Speedway, most recently in 2008. “On the years you run good, you really love it. Some of the years I’ve been here, I’ve left saying, ‘I can’t wait to get off this mountain.’ It’s a huge challenge, but that’s what makes this place fun. It’s the biggest challenge we have all year.”

In the first session of qualifying, Anderson was No. 2 with a 7.039-second pass at 194.49 mph that was only bested by Summit Racing teammate Jason Line, who crossed the finish line with a 7.036, 196.22. In the later session and in cooler, slightly breezier conditions, Anderson snatched the pole from Line with a 6.9809, 196.30. Line clocked a 7.004, 195.70 and was bumped to the No. 5 position.

KB Racing-powered Deric Kramer was No. 2 with a 6.981, 196.04. Bo Butner, the incoming points leader, was No. 2 after Q1 on a 7.038, 196.85 and finished the day No. 9 with his 7.015, 196.59.

Anderson’s description of the overhaul required for the Pro Stock cars to race in Denver was only partly in jest.

“You basically lift the gas cap up and slide a new car underneath it to race at this race only,” he said. “You pull your hair out every year you come up here and make your first run. You’re like, how does it do these things? But it does, and you have to tackle that challenge, adapt, and make the right changes. It takes a lot of effort and a lot of learning, and you need every single run you get.

“We’re learning as we go, and we’re one of the best in the group out here at making changes and adapting. I’m proud of the guys and the job they’ve done. My Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro is great, and now it’s up to the driver and engine tuner to get that part right, too. We have a solid chance on Saturday for the pole, and a solid chance on Sunday to win the event. I need a win. I haven’t had one since here last season, and I feel that this is my best chance this year.”

Qualifying continues on Saturday at Bandimere Speedway with sessions scheduled at 4:15 and 7:15 pm local time. Sunday eliminations are scheduled to begin at 11am MDT.
