Top Sportsman and Top Dragster competitors have waited a long time for this. The drivers of these hyper-efficient beasts were invited to bring their machines to Indy for this week’s 65th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, and a combined 75 gleefully answered the call.
Among the Top Sportsman competitors towing to the staging lanes for the first round of qualifying at the venerable event was Vonnie Mills, of Kennedyville, Md., and her Show-n-Tell 2006 Chevy Cobalt.
“We’ve been waiting for Top Sportsman to race here for a very long time,” said Mills, who was accompanied at the track by her family, including husband Eddie.
Mills has been racing since before her kids were born – over 34 years – and has been involved in the Top Sportsman class for about a decade.
“We ran Super Gas and Super Comp for a long, long time,” she said. “I’m drawn to it because of the speed, and it’s very competitive. We’ve won some national events and finished No. 8 in the world last year. It was probably our best year ever, but we’re excited to be here. We really wanted to be here for the first time they ran Top Sportsman at the U.S. Nationals.”
